To HEPA or not to HEPA?

A key feature for Vacuum Cleaners is whether the model offers a HEPA filter.

What is a HEPA filter?

HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air filtration. It represents an international standard for filters, used for many commercial applications. For your vacuum cleaner, HEPA filters trap very small particles that your non HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner would recirculate into the air.

Standard HEPA filters measure efficiency at 0.3 microns. A typical HEPA filter removes 99.97% of particles of the 0.3 micron size.

Why select a vacuum with a HEPA filter?

A HEPA filter is more effective at trapping minute particles and can help you minimise dust and particles if you have asthma or a dust allergy.

Why not select a vacuum with a HEPA filter?

To be effective you have to clean or replace the HEPA filter regularly. The filters are more expensive so you should ensure you understand the ongoing costs associated with buying new filters regularly.

If you are not prepared to maintain the HEPA filter, it will simply be no advantage and you may as well not pay the premium associated with a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
