The race is on to capture thehearts and pocketbooks of Australian consumers who want to have internet TV in their living room. Unfortunately, with so many companies scrambling for attention and market share, there is as yet no uniform content or interface.

In most cases, you will have access to streaming video services, social media, subscription services and free-to-air TV, as well as to one or more of the major networks' "catch up" TV services which allow you to view previously aired programs for a limited period of time. Also, as with your smartphone, hundreds of apps are available for download, though some set top boxes offer more than others.
Aside from what's inside the set top box itself, the remote is another feature to take careful note of when choosing an internet TV set top box. A few come with voice and/or motion commands, others feature a QWERTY keyboard and many even give you the option of downloading an app on to your smartphone and using that as a remote.
When buying an IPTV set top box, it's important to read the fine print first. In some cases, such as Fetch TV, you have a range of ISPs to choose from while in other cases, such as Telstra's T-Box, you have only one. Match your preferred set top box with your preferred service provider (or whatever is available in your area) and you will be well on your way to having the best of all worlds, with very few compromises.
Everything depends on your connection speed, so you may have to upgrade your service if you don't have a high speed broadband connection or a fast and stable WiFi connection.
