Five steps for HDTV

The price of HDTV compatible TVs continues to drop however seeing High Definition TV requires more than just a screen.

HDTV Television

You need a television compatible with High Definition (HD) inputs eg 720p, 1080i, 1080p.

HD is at least 720p, meaning 720 lines of pixels are used to create the TV picture. The p stands for progressive scanning. This technique scans and displays all of the lines in one frame.

HD pay tv also transmits programs in 1080i format, eg 1,080 lines are used to create the TV picture, but the i stands for interlaced scanning. That means that half the lines are displayed in one frame, and the other half in the frame that follows. Blu Ray discs use 1,080p format. TVs compatible with the 1,080p format are described as "Full HD" compatible.

Connect a HD Device

You need to connect a device to input High Definition signal to your television eg Satellite or Cable TV Receiver, Digital TV Receiver (external device or built in to the television), Blu Ray player or High Definition DVD player.

If you are about to purchase a new television, then consider getting a model with a inbuilt high definition digital tuner.

Connect with HD Compatible Cables

Use a suitable cable to get the HD signal to your Television.  S-Video and Composite video do not support HD. You must use Component video, HDMI or DVI for HD.

Check the HD Device output

Review the settings for the output of your device.  Ensure that the device is actually outputing a High Definition format.

Tune in to HD content

Tune into the HD version of free to air channels or pay tv channels.  With a DVD, HD DVD or Blu Ray player - the disc has to be in a high definition format.
